sprocket and chain

Post by fasteddiecopeman » Thu Aug 06, 2009 11:28 am

Your manual has a measurement for 21 pins (12.7"), so until your chain exceeds that it's OK. Measured mine for EACH 21 pins just before I left on the trip. My chain would have lasted MANY MORE KMS, but I 'buggared' up when I adjusted it at Watson Lake. I felt that the number of "flats" I'd adjusted seemed excessive (7 flats), but failed to re-check the chain's free play after tightening the rear axle. I forgot that the chain can TIGHTEN as you tighten the axle. The result was that my overly tight chain started to die riding to Teslin (which is where I realized it was too tight and re-adjusted it, but too late), and was TOTALLY pooched by Whitehorse where I changed it for a new DID O-ring chain. Another old way of checking is to put tension on your chain in the middle of its run, then try to pull it away from a rear sprocket tooth in the rear-center - when it comes out HALF a tooth depth, replace it. Cheers, Ed
