I had a 78 XT500. A small independent motorcycle shop got the bike in a trade. The motor needed rebuilt, so the bike was bored to 525cc, and he put a 12:1 piston in it. I bought that bike right after the rebuild was done. Had to run high octane fuel but it got 60 + mpg so the added cost was no big deal.
At the time I owned it, I weighed about 225lbs. If I didn't pull the compression release, I could stand on the kick starter. If you rolled the piston to where compression stopped it, and pulled in the compression release, it would start in a nice easy kick. Just make sure you did a full kick. A half kick would kick back violently.I don't remember what the speedo went to, but it would bury it easily with a 1 tooth bigger front sprocket.

We would trailer them to a local gravel pit. Chivied Joanne into trying my 'Big Bike' . . . 'amble around a bit, when you get to that mound of dirt just twist the throttle about a quarter turn . . ' Well she did, and jumped about 4-5ft !!' - figured it would be worth the beating. To my surprise she had a mile-wide grin . . 'that was NEAT !!' . . and she did it a few more times. I taught her that starting was a matter of 'technique' not strength. Any number of people wanted to try the bike, but none of them could kick her over. I'd call Joanne over, she'd pop one kick and off she'd go !! LOVED the expressions on 'Tough Guys' !! No key, no battery, just the magneto ignition. Only I and the guy I bought it from were the only ones in town that could start it. Step on starter until VERY HARD. Hit valve release lever, push starter a precise amount. Rlease lever, reset starter and whump. ____________ _________ _________ _________ No viruses found in this outgoing message Scanned by iolo AntiVirus 1.5.7.1 http://www.iolo com [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
