chain wax

Chain wax products had just appeared on the market when a friend and I decided to give them a try on his Seca II and my Transalp. The wax did a great job of keeping the wheel clean and a rotten job of lubing the chain. Like Greg, Dan and I had chains seize up way earlier than ever before. I used to have it around here but cannot find it or else I'd post a photo. I'd kept the link of chain I cut to remove the waxed chain off at about 7,500 miles. The link pins had zero lube inside. After I ground the heads off adjacent pins and pried the side plate off, I had to drive the pins through the bushing with a punch. They were that stuck from lack of lube. My theory was the chemical carrier for the wax got around the o-rings and dried out the permanent lube. If you did nothing but spray & wipe a chain with WD40, it would last a LOT longer than with a wax. Just one rider's opinion. Me? I have a Scottoiler on my KLR. I've had one on a Transalp, two SV650s, a DL1000 and a 919. eddie

using chain wax once because I heard it was not as messy and in the one can saw more wear then I have ever seen that quickly on an o-ring chain, just my opinion but I think the wax products are garbage. Have a great day,,,,,Greg

Fleet Farm, hanging on the pegboard right next to the flashlights.
