I have about 30k on my 08, I love it's handling, braking, comfort 1000 times more than previous models, but it's reliability has sucked. I now know what can go wrong, so it will never leave me stranded again (fingers crossed) but getting there was horrible. My previous 04 never once left me stranded (Till I cut it into a car door at 45) but this 08 has left me scratching my head in the wilderness 7 times. Always electrical, starter switch went bad but shorted main fuse every time before showing signs, and harness under tank sucks and needs to be adressed on day one.
Buy skid plate, crash bars, and hand guards or you will regret it, thats 100% for sure.

Subject: [DSN_KLR650] Re: Looking for advise on buying a new 2008-2009 KLR650
Here is my two cents after 20K on a 2005.
I am expecting 60K on my before any work, that is assuming I get off my butt and check my valve clearances. I run a 16T front sprocket which has knocked down the rpm a bit at hwy speed and it still has the push I need for my commuting and occasional loaded down road trips.
I didn't care for the vibration in the handlebars, but calmed it with gel grips. They are worth the money. I replaced the seat with a Corbin and like it better than stock. For long trips, wearing a pair of padded bicycle shorts under the riding pants make the seat even better. Also good for horses.
My MPG has never been quite as good as some others. 48 is usually my best on the hwy at speed. Most my riding is above 6,000 feet, so maybe that makes difference. As soon as the roads clear of snow, which is usually mid or late April I ride. Using a heated jacket, I do pretty well in the 30's. The hand guards aren't particularly good for much other than a windbreak, which is all I ask of them. A tall windshield keeps a little wind off your chest, but for me it dumps it right at the neck, which is the chink in my riding armor. Always cold around the neck.
Don't have an opinion about 09 vs 10, other than to say the bike you are waiting will never be as good as the one in your garage.

I want to buy an Enduro that can take me on multi-state trips and even cross country (at least once), so that is why I am looking at buying a KLR650. I like the fact that Kawasaki has made some changes to the KLR650 in 2008 to make if more highway friendly (fairing, piston rings, seat change) and the fact that the KLRs have been in production since 1987 and have liquid cooled engines. I plan on making the KLR650 my last bike, since I tend to keep my bikes awhile, actually, I still have most of my 73 Honda CB100, all but the engine which locked up one day with 21,000 miles on it (20,000 from me).
