All,
There used to be a site at Iron Jungle that showed one picture of each year of the KLR. They stopped hosting the site a while back. I've been working hard on getting new photos, correcting errors and adding information... see what you think. It's at the first link ("KLR Timeline") at
www.xanga.com/watt_man . Silly me, I used to think the 2006 model was the "A20" ! You might also be surprised how production rates have taken off since 2003.

Great job getting it all back together.
Not to be picky but KLR650 is the "marketing"
model name. The manufacturers model name is
KL650*** so a 'A' model KLR650 would be
KL650A not KLR650A.
The 2009 is an E9F. Wonder what 2010 will be? E0G?

Agreed on "KL650" - I wasn't sure if that was going to confuse the issue further, but you're totally right.
And so far, yes, "E0G" is my guess. We'll know pretty soon!

Bill,
The use of three letters/numeral for a designation can be problamatic;
for example:
We note that they use the letter 'E' ie E0G which precludes/prohibits a model starting with a 'D' such as D0G. Now there is a model designation you can be proud of--I'm going to go ride my DOG.
yawn.
Then you get to the model starting with the letter 'P', throw in a numeral 1, go through the iterations of letters and you get--
P1G =pee one gee, perhaps it would suggest that the bike is a pig, or you must pee a thousand bucks for a dohickey failure/repair.
Yeah, I am going to go ride my Pig .or. micro hawg.
Hmmm.
Just who would call their beloved KLR a pig?
Who me?
(Not since early this morning....)
just mastering the obvious.
revmaaatin. yes. I did ride the P1G today. 2X.

The change was in 2006. Read the timeline, the details are there.
The 2005 is known as the A19, but
the 2006 is known as the "A6F". 2007: A7F. 2008: E8F. They don't make KLR650As anymore. They're all Es now.

I think I remember reading somewhere that they changed the alpha numeric when
they shifted manufacturing to Taiwan or wherever the heck they started making
the bikes other than Japan. Of course, I also think I remember reading somewhere
that they shifted to Taiwan before 2006 so the same old story holds true: I
have no idea what I'm talking about and I'm just helping to muddle and
confuse the situation.
