shut down after 1 hour stops!

I went on a great 180 mile ride yesterday; combo dirt and obscure backroad pavement. All in all, awesome and uneventful, except on 2 occasions: I stopped for lunch for about 1 hour and about 2 minutes into my ride after that, the bike shut down like it ran out of gas. About two hours later, I stopped for a snack and a couple of beers at a favorite pub, and about 2 minutes into my continued ride, the same thing happened. Plenty of gas both times. Air Filter not too dirty! One time I switched from "Gas On" to "Reserve" and it helped for a short while, the next time it did not help at all, as I coasted to a stop both times.. Both times when I stopped for good, I opened the gas cap and closed it and it started right up and no more problem until the 2nd (stop for about 1 hour) incident. I meant to go out in the garage and try again after being home about an hour, but forgot (fell asleep). Any help appreciated. Ron Moorhouse [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Have you received any responses to this message? I think you stumbled on the problem when you opened the gas cap. I have experienced similar symptoms due to a bad pressure/vacuum release in the cap on my KLR. Is there a "whoosh" when you open your tank? Does your gas cap whistle after a hard ride on a hot day? When their is a vacuum on the tank the fuel doesn't run out or runs out at insufficient rate to feed the bike. Check the vent line to the cap is clear by blowing through it. If the vent line is clear the problem is probably in the cap itself. I've made a habit of opening and closing the tank when I stop for breaks as a manual pressure/vacuum release strategy. klr cautions

Hello list-- Adventure bikes are starting to pass through our part of the country again (more than just me!) AS a reminder: South Dakota is an OPEN RANGE state, cattle/horses might be on any road, at any time, at any location through out the state. Especially, Please pay attention if you are high-balling down our gravel roads. It is calving season now--and cows trample fences this afternoon to get back to where they were moved from this morning. Bulls especially will trample fences to find their way back to the HOT ladies. Ah, spring time in the Dakota's. The second thing of DANGER-- is the huge oversize field equipment that are now traveling our roads (as well as KS, NE, ND, MT, MO, IA, etal) and some of this stuff is a full lane and a half wide. Much of it has huge blind spots when you are close to it. The 'wings' that are folded up contain, 'points', shovels, and disc blades that could slice off an leg/arm/head upon impact. Use extreme caution when approaching/passing these monsters--as they will/could smoosh you and not even know they ran over you. As always with any cage--assume the farm equipment operator does see you. Good chance he is running on caffeine, etc. and lastly, Since the grass is always greener along the road ditch-- There is still plenty of deer--if you must ride at night--they have not given up on their war with the motorcyles. revmaaatin.
