Mark Sampson recently took one on a border ride in AZ and NM and raved about how it performed. It is a bit spendy, around $6k. I think the KLX250 is quite a bit cheaper. I have read some reports from big guys (a lot bigger than you) on that bike, and haven't heard any complaints. There is a lot of hot-rod stuff for it, not surprising, since it is derived from the 300 enduro bike. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

I would love to have an old (70's) XL350. I had one at the same time a buddy of mine had the newer (85 I think) XR350R. His was faster and had twice the suspension, but when it came to climbing, that old 350 was the one to have. You had to keep the new one screaming, or it would start clattering and dropping rpm's. The old one was a tractor in comparison.

It is not as powerful as I would have guessed (based on memories of how fast a 250 felt when I was 9) but I know that can be improved if you want to. (I'm OK with it 'as-is').
If you're anything like me, it isn't that the 250 isn't as fast as it was when you were a kid, It is the extra poundage it now has to carry :- (
