more choke needed to start, starting more difficult

Post by gust0261 » Mon Apr 13, 2009 9:38 am

I have a 2007 KLR650. Recently it has been having more trouble starting (have not gotten stranded yet, but worried I might be). It seems to need more and more choke to start and is taking longer and longer to start every time I use it. Any ideas about what could be causing this?

Could be many things, but have you drained the float bowl or added anything to the fuel recently ? Dose of Seafoam once and a while will generally keep the varnish away from the jets. Spark Plug fairly fresh ? I know I harp on about Seafoam, but I have seen this stuff do wonders. Dooden A15 Green Ape

Could be time to check the valve clearance. tight clearance can cause your problem.

oem or aftermarket cluth ??

Post by Jeff Khoury » Tue Apr 14, 2009 11:17 am

Good Morning, I've had good luck with parts from KG Clutch Factory. I installed new Kevlar plates, steel plates and high-power springs in my old Seca II and I cannot believe the difference in performance. Engagement is smooth with good feel, even with synthetic oil. (Of course with high-power springs the lever tension is higher, but I don't mind) Total price was right around $100 for everything. Their prices are reasonable and I would say they're just as good as Barnett, at a lower price. -Jeff Khoury Astatic Solutions, LLC.

Howdy listers, My 50,000 smiles klr needs a new clutch. Any advice on after market vs. stock parts to include plates and springs ? prices vs performance. Thanks. Your Pilot circuit is getting clogged. Take off the carb, remove the top cover. Remove slide, diaphragm and needle to prevent damage remove bowl, being careful of the gasket. unscrew pilot jet. clean all the holes in the pilot jet with carb cleaner and a guitar string or strand from a brass wire brush and pressurized carb cleaner. clean the passages by spraying pressurized carb cleaner through the pilot circuit, looking to make sure it comes squirting out the holes in the venturi. take the end off a cotton swab and spin it in the hole where the pilot jet goes. reassemble. run some sea foam through it for a couple of tanks. good as new. -Jeff Khoury Astatic Solutions, LLC.
