[dsn_klr650] gas is gas.. octane rating.......cylind

Ah, no, gas is not gas.
Here in California, there are addatives in the gas because of smog
regulations that aren't in fuels in other states. Do a little research on things like
MTBE (methyl tertiary butyl ether), now illegal, I think, but there are
other "oxygenator" chemicals in CA gas that are not in other states gas. Do a
little research on "winter blends" and "summer blends"
Also, do a little research on how much alcohol is in CA gas, also due to
smog regulations. All the pumps here say it may contain up to 10% ethanol.
Alcohol consumption is something like twice that of gas. So if you have 10%
ethanol in your gas, your mileage just went down about 5%
When these chemicals are added, with a lower specific energy than gasoline,
it displaces the gasoline with the oxygenator, thereby lowering the total
energy content of gasoline in CA. Further reduction in MPG.
I do enough cross country driving towing my race car to see a 1-2 mpg
difference.
So no, gas is not gas........Is water, water??? If your in a chemistry lab,
well maybe. Out in the real world, like everyone else here, it means
something different.

The additives are different, and are put into the truck after it fills

for whatever that's worth (possibly very little).
That said, I don't pay much attention to the brand name of gasoline that
I am buying.
I do avoid ethanol when possible - I get measurably lower mileage from
E90 and I prefer my corn in food rather than my gas tank.
