lights/speedometer/rpm gauge suddenly stopped working

I was starting my 2005 KLR650 yesterday and I think I may have held the starter button in a little too long. It started up, but about 2 seconds later the front and rear lights went out and the speedometer and RPM guage stopped working.
So, as far as I can see all electrical stuff in the bike stopped working, as if I had blown a fuse or something.
(1) Any suggestions as to how to fix this? Is there actually a fuse somewhere?
(2) Is it safe to drive it back to my house in its current condition? It seems to work fine otherwise. (I am worried that some internal mechanism in the motorcycle requires electricity).
Thanks,
Elliot

check your speedo cable
The rest check your fuses esp. under the seat.

Fuses are under the Seat.
Side covers off
Seat off
Right on top of battery there is a fuse holder clipped to a tab.
Good Luck
Speedo is cable driven ( I know this cause my cable is still broken)
