fuel tank question

I recently bought a '93 KLR 650. It included an installed set of Happy Trails case guards and an uninstalled set of Happy Trails nerf bars. I like the idea of the nerf bars. Bike also included an uninstalled IMS 6.6 gallon translucent white tank. I like the idea of longer range without having to install an aux fuel cell, like I had to do on my BMW. Are the Nerf Bars compatible with the IMS tank? I thought I saw a comment that the nerf bars wouldn't fit if the IMS large tank was installed. If they aren't compatible what is the Wisdom of the List as to what's better, the IMS tank with built in shrouds and larger usable capacity or the better protection of the steel Nerf Bars at the expense of a little less range? Thanks in advance. Greg Roberts XL250R K1100LT KLR-650

No, they won't work together. I think the tank is better bang for the buck: protection and range.

Give me the Nerf Bars, I will pay postage on them, you install the IMS tank. ;-) Dooden A15 Green Ape Seriously seems I just read that also, I think the IMS tank is to wide for the Nerf Bars, but im sure somebody who knows will pipe-in soon.

Long shot question here... Has anybody ridden a KLR to Tierra del Fuego with the IMS tank that you can see thru? I am interested in whether or not the tank might be a problem when going thru customs/inspections or with cops looking for an excuse. There are plenty of beaucratic nightmare stories from down there... thx Joe

Can't find an aftermarket manual for the 250, and know KAW puts out a base manual and a supplemental manual for the 250. With the manual I have on the 650, could I get by with just the supplemental manual to do what I need to the 250, primarily good maintenance? >
I'd say you need the base manual, which covers the 600 and (I think) an earlier 500. Then with supplements for the 250 and the 650 you have all bases covered. If you are satisfied with the Clymer for your 650, then you just need the base manual and the 250 supplement. The reason I suggest the 650 supplement as well, even though you have the Clymer, is twofold. 1) I think the factory manuals are in some respects superior; and 2) even if not , more information is always better than less.

Isn't transparency what everyone strives for these days? Or do you mean to suggest that because a narc or customs agent can see that you have nothing hidden in your translucent tank, he might now have cause to wonder what might be stashed in the opaque tanks on your buddies' bikes? If he saw "Easy Rider", he's going to wonder anyway.
