I ride fire roads and some easy single track in British Columbia, and was thinking about the need for shin and knee armor.
Any comments and or recommendations?
Cheers...
Rick

It all depends on how aggressive you ride. I ride the same roads all over
B.C without any armour, but I ride fairly conservatively. If you are going to
push the envelope get proper gear,if you are going to enjoy the scenery,
leather gloves, boots, and jacket will do it for you.

After hearing of someone walking away from a particularly nasty crash
recently due to wearing of some armor, it seems like the best idea
for navigating the urban jungles. Anyone have any suggestions of this
type of gear for daily use?

Thanks for the info on body armor. Tried the outfit you showed on the
link but the codpiece was too small!

You can spend alot on protection.
Full face helmet
Jacket with padding on forearm, elbow, shoulder, and spine
Back protector if your jacket doesn't have one
Pants with padded knees and hips
Boots can be heavy duty work boots.
Gloves with palm pads
Leather is better. I took 2 falls and my leather jacket is barely
scratched.
my tectile (cordura?) pants look like hell, but still work
Leather costs twice what textile costs. but lasts longer. I think in
the long run if you ride alot, get leather
Tectile has a greater temperature range. its cooler than leather when
it's hot and warmer than leather when it's cold

I commute daily on my A16. I wear an Aerostitch Darien Hi-Viz jacket with
the shoulder, elbow and spine/kidney armour. Also Darrien pants with the
hip armour. It is not cheap (~$800?) but its durable. I also wear the
same suit when riding offroad, much to the amusement of the people I ride
with. See

I wear the TourMaster jacket for urban commuting, and throw on the
pants for weekend trips. I feel that it is similar to Aerostitch
(although not water-proof) at a much lower price. The one time I went
down in a sandy corner, my leather glove and hip pad took all the
beating and I didn't.

After purchasing my KLR, I got the Joe Rocket
Ballistic Meteor Jacket, gloves and pants from
http://www.discountmotorcycleapparel.com/
Cheap-ish and of pretty good quality. I haven't gone
down on this bike yet, but I feel secure should I have
to..
