Post by Razvan B » Wed Aug 23, 2000 3:34 pm

Hi. I'm replacing my fork seals and would like to use a heavier oil. So i'm wondering what is the stock oil weight in a A8(1994). Thanks. Any advice on changing the seals??? Raz A8

I'm going to be changing my fork seals and was wondering if I should switch to a different weight fork oil. Bel-Ray 10W is coming with the seals. I do alot of semi-technical trail riding (jeep trails and moderate single track). The stock oil (was it dealer installed?) worked just fine, but why not improve upon it. I'd sure like comments from those that have experimented with different weight oils. I weigh 175 lbs. Thanks Kevin A17 (7500 miles)

I have 10w in my forks with the LR progresive fork springs and I think it is a good all-round weight to use in your forks. I have heard 5w is too fast.

Was the switch to LR progressive springs a worthwhile upgrade?

I just went to the exact same setup on my 2000. I am 50 pounds heavier than you (Kevin). I have 15w in my 99 and it's a bit too harsh... Go 7.5 or 10w, yo'll be happy. Thansk CA Stu A13 A13

I agree on the 15w being too harsh. I have 15w in mine and bounce around too much in rocky areas. But am too lazy to change. Criswell CA Stu wrote:

If you want something in between, 10W < (Mobil 1) ATF < 15W. That's what I am running in my cartridge forks and it was perfect for me (235lbs). A cheap alternative at least. Z DC A5X A12X

Kevin, Stu is right about the 15W fork oil IMO. I weigh the same as you and settled on 7.5W fork oil. I tried 10 and 15W and they were too harsh for my tastes and riding style (80on/20off). I have been using BMW 7.5W fork oil. The LR progressive fork springs make a world of difference. YMMV, John Lyon --- CA Stu wrote:

I'm 210 and found the 15wt. was harsh w/the Prog LR springs in the first Mule. When I get around to doing Mule II(A17), it'll be with 7.5 or 8wt. I may try 2.25 or 2.5" inch spacers as well, instead of 2'', to compensate for higher/stiffer preload in the back. Stu.......you got two lucky A13's?

So is heavier fork oil like heavy dark beer - it's OK for a while? Whereas one can drink standard (Utah) 3.2 all day without all the bumps. Kevin A17
