Radical changes in exhaust or intake characteristic would probably be two times it would be appropriate to consider changes. Also poor fuel economy not related to your right wrist might be worthy of consideration. Increased displacement like a 705 kit would probably also be worth looking into rejetting. In most circumstances I would not be rejetting a KLR just to try to increase engine performance unless there was a driveability issue. klr 650 : re-jetting
Jeff, let me A-men your position on not re-jetting. On my 08 I did have a modified exhaust, and did purchase the adjustable pilot screw and went to a size larger jet. After a short while of putting up with loss of mid-range power, I removed the modified exhaust replaced it with a stock one, replaced the larger jet with the stock size. I did leave the adjustable pilot screw and did drill the slide to 7/64. I believe the most important move was drilling the slide. I may end up using more fuel due to seeing how fast it now moves passed 5K on shifts but I would not modify any thing else. Now I just have to convince my dealer that I'm going to keep riding my 08 recalled bike until or if they get in the new wiring harness... If it smokes I have good insurance
