clutch switch or nuetral switch bad?

The reason I ask is that we could not find any wires behind the cover on the left. There was something that looked like a starter solinoid but nothing else. As soon as it was put in gear and the clutch eased out the tach needle would go to zero and motor would cut off. We took the clutch switch apart and cleaned the contacts but it did nnot make a difference. Not sure where the nuetral switch is.
