tankbags and tail bags

Post by rkochen » Tue Feb 24, 2009 10:17 pm

I'm new to this list and have a couple general questions. My son is picking up his NEW KLR 09 tomorrow and we've talked about tankbags and tail bags. He is getting the taller shield and gel seat as options. Any suggestions on quality accessories for the 09? He wants to have it setup primarily for pavement and highway riding but I suspect he will be off road occasioally. He is signed up for this list and I'd guess he'll chime in at some point. RJ, I have an 08 which is the same as the 09 except for the decals. I am running a RKA tank bag. You can have a look at it at: http://picasaweb.google.com/fmh3469/08KLR650E8F#5270490982489117442 There is also some photos of other accessories. Mike H.

Marsee vs Wolfman vs Kawasaki Tank Bags I have owned all three. The Kawasaki tank bag died faster than my pet turtles and sea horses. The plastic strap ends that hold the tank bag to the bottom edge of the tank cannot handle vigorous offroad rides and promptly break off. My Wolfman was great but died of old age and my friend's dog finally finished it off. The Marsee is actually even better than the Wolfman. The Marsee has stronger magnets and you can unzip the bag from the magnetic base. This I could not do with the Wolfman. The Wolfman and Marsee are of similar quality but I believe the Marsee is just a little better designed. The main reason I bought the Marsee is cuz I found a new one on ebay for a good price and it looked OK. I couldn't find any Wolfman at a decent price. So, I got lucky trying a brand I never heard of before. Jeffrey

base. This I could not do with the Wolfman. Interesting, ski man. I must add that my Wolfman is not magnetic as I ve installed the IMS military tank. Also I somehow don t trust a magnetic bag on a dual sport. Also again....Wolfman himself is a friend of this list. Many of us have met him in Moab. I have an 08 and the Wolfman Explorer fits on the tank perfectly. It is a well thought out and very well made product. The Fieldsheer Expander tailbag fits the rack like it was made for it and is also a quality product at a very low price..$56 online. I bought a Kawi gel seat for my bike and it is less comfortable than stock and pretty much money thrown away. There is a seller on ebay that makes a good siderack for soft luggage for around $100. I use them with Aerostitch dry saddlebags made by Ortlieb. Nice product and easy on/off. LB

The magnetic tank bags I have had both had failsafe straps to secure them the crossbar of the handlebars. The Wolfman had weaker magnets and therefore easier to flip out of the way when I needed to gas up. The Marsee takes some effort to flip out of the way because the magnets are so strong. One wouldn't bother detaching the Marsee bag from its base just for gas. Both the Marsee and Wolfman are great bags. I let price be the determining factor since they are so similar. Jeffrey

I bought this bag last summer for $53 from Iron Pony. They were the same price at BikeBandit and the Motorcycle Superstore. I see that bag is now $80.....Wow!...that's a 50% increase in less than a year. FWIW I would still buy it at $80. LB.

The conventional wisdom says Wolfman, and I can't say I disagree. However, the Dual Star tank bag is very nice and very well made, if you can get them to take your order and then stand a possibly interminable wait. KTM also sells a bag for the LC4 Adventure that fits a lot of DS tanks, including the KLR. The bag unzips very quickly from a harness that remains attached to the bike. It is smaller than the Wolfman, but expands to add a whole second story of capacity. About $90 at Cyclehutt. Me, I'm still looking for the magnetic bag for my IMS tank. ;-{>
