, I replaced that 1/4" line with BMW fuel line (sorry, it was a gift, I
know not the source) commonly found on Airhead BMW's--and it went on much
more smoothly--and did not leak, even without clamps.

Martin,
I believe the 7mm line as found on this page,
http://www.bfyobsoleteparts.com/1956-79-german-fuel-line-pr-1165.html
works like a charm.
Kind of expensive but when it doesn't cause problems like leaks or coming
apart inside from the fuel it might be worth the cost.
I replace mine every two or three years even though it looks good. I
think the KLR takes about 9" so buying a foot of line would be enough
for one bike. If a guy bought 6-10 feet he could pass it out at a tech
day and help a bunch of folks out.
One tip that can save a guy some trouble when removing this line is to
put an 8mm (I think) flat washer on the nipple before installing the fuel
line. When it's time to remove the line you pull on the washer which
pushes on the fuel line. Pulling on the line tends to make it a bit
tighter, kind of like the old Chinese finger traps.
Best,
