I'm planning a ride to California on Saturday. Can anyone detail the "rules" and etc. for lane-splitting? (Never done it!) Thanks, Ed

The only rule (read 'Law') regarding lane splitting in CA, is you are not suppose to exceed 25 MPH when doing it (although many do). There is also a 'safety' factor, i.e. you must do it 'safely'. It is pretty common here, especially on the Freeways when they slow down (read crawl) or at stoplights. Many split the lanes at red lights to get to the front - then accelerate ahead of the cagers. I only do it occasionally, usually during a traffic backup. I'm also paranoid some jerk will slam open his door or something (although I've never really heard of that). There is no law about lane splitting in California .... never has been. In fact if the lane was wide enough a car could to it. From CHP website .... " Lane splitting by motorcycles is permissible but must be done in a safe and prudent manner." It all about being safe, i.e. not reckless driving Just my 2 cents. Pete

1)On fwys, split between fast or inner lane and next lane whether HOV/Diamond lane or not. 2)Nobody gets written up unless they are going 25 mph faster than traffic. And don't split above 75 mph(common sense). 3)Have your brighter than stock brights on and your finger near your LOUDer than stock horn. Bright clothing bright colored bike etc. 4)Don't split lanes between the 10 and 101 fwys on the 405/San Diego Fwy. Cagers in that area are nasty and jealous of your freedom. 5)Wear a an excellent helmet and an armored jacket. 6)Make sure you have good brakes ie oversized rotor kit. 7)Make sure you have plenty of health insurance. 8)Don't do it in the rain.
