Is it me or what? About two years ago, I bought some brake pads (front and rear), as I recall, the cost was about $29 for both pads. Yesterday, the dealership told me that the cost for Kawasaki Brake pads is now about $75!, aftermarket pads are about $70! Man, talk about inflation! A 100%+ price increase in about 2 years! Am I missing something? Eddie (03' KLR650 - "la poderosa")

I was flipping channels the other day and saw a thing on an electric dirtbike doing a comparison between it and a 250 Yamaha YZ. While not the bike the YZ was .... still it was only 140 pounds. How bout that KLR riders if you have ever tried to pick up our pig tank facing downhill? It would run for about 2 hours. And no loud pipe to worry about. Criswell

Parts are just another profit center for brick & mortar dealers. They no longer sell many or most parts for MSRP. They are usually marked-up significantly over MSRP. Some dealers charge one price at the parts counter and a higher price in the service department. Most customers don't know they are being charged more than MSRP because your B&M dealer receipt has the same price across the List, Net and Amount columns, which is misleading. If you purchase the same part mail order, the Net and Amount columns will be the same and lower than the List column, in effect, your discount from the List price. The List column for B&M dealer parts will be the same or more than the List column for mail order parts. The B&M dealer gets away with charging inflated prices for parts because they can and, technically, (dealer)List is not MSRP, it's whatever the dealer wants to set it at; that's capitalism, I guess. The bottom line to me is, however, I don't want to pay *more than MSRP* when the dealer is already making more than 100% profit on parts already. For me, I don't buy anything at B&M dealers unless I have to. [I do purchase many OEM parts by mail order, especially when I think the aftermarket parts are not "up- to-snuff"; there is a lot of aftermarket crap out there; but there is also good aftermarket stuff, and some that is the same part as the OEM at a fraction of it's cost; talking mostly cages here.] This is my logic, which probably has it's flaws. Alan,,,,,not a total cheapskate Example,(same part no.): List Net Amount Dealer $5 $5 $5 or Dealer $10 $10 $10 M.O. $5 $3.50 $3.50

Kolbe Honda, Kawasaki etc. in Woodland Hills, CA went out of business a few months ago. The dealership had been around forever. They always charged high prices on everything from parts to new bikes. Obviously though, they weren't making 100+ percent on parts unless they were selling enough parts to cover the cost of bricks and mortar and their employees. Despite the high prices it was very convenient to be able to get the correct part esp. when it was in inventory at the store and I had one of my bikes apart. I also managed to borrow an expensive chain rivet tool from them once even though I didn't buy the chain or sprocket from them. Many dealerships whether Mercedes, Honda car or moto have large wholesale or volume parts operations. Ron Ayers, I gather is a moto dealer example of this. When the price of gas was over $4 a gallon it was much better to order from Ron Ayers or Arrowhead/Fred or Ebay or even Amazon. Amazon is doing well linking thousands of sellers of milions of items. Now, it most likely doesn't cost you over $7 to drive back and forth to a brick and mortar store anymore. So, it often isn't worth paying shipping anymore unless you get out of your state sales tax by buying out of state and/or over the internet. Biggest Flaw is that when you really need the B&M Dealer, good chance he will be out of business next time you want something if everybody did it that way. Not saying its the way I fly on everything, otherwise i would not have brought up Super Fred in his Super Tights sending out parts. But it is another view of the dealership. Dooden A15 Green Ape
