knobby tires at high speed

Old Guy Howdy, I just ordered a pair of Pirelli Scorpion AT's for about the mix you describe. I had worn 50/50 tires on it when I bought it and didn't like them as I'm really a roadie. These I replaced with Kenda 761s and they were OK. They certainly are cheep! The front tire has scalloped - maybe my fault due to suspension issues? Anyway, I thought about it a bit and read reviews before going with the Pirellis. The KLR FAQ offers a link to an interesting tire review page. Lots of luck! Im the only one that likes them, but the Avon Gripster M24. I got 12,000 miles out of the last rear and have 18k on the front. I dont worry about traction since i am as slow as a snail anyway. I run two kinds of tires..I like the dunlap 606s for when I'm doing serious offroad duty..But I mostly run the stock rubber..I like them on the road and they do fairly well off road..and they are cheap.. I think I paid 50 bucks for the last rear I bought..They waer nice they are good in the wet.. The only downside is they are a dealer only and usually have to be ordered..But there you go that's my recommendation.. Hotrodkawi

Dunlop 606 in front, Kenda K 270 on the back. Both are good offroad. Both are ok on road. Dunlop pricey, Kenda cheap. I got a set of Kenda 270's front and rear, they are OK. I miss the Dunlop D606, but it was a bit pricey and didn't last too long (I am hard on tires) -- Regards, Richard Bessey

I'm on my second set of MEFOs Explorer Sport 99 and our crew all use them (road & dirt) (3 KLRs & 1 Honda XR650L). The one guy on a BMW F650GS has Bridgestone Trailwings (80/20) and he always has to sit at the bottom of the hill. I know everyone talks about price but I like them and they don't let us down. We run a lot of dirt roads in the new natural gas fields of northwestern Pennsylvania. Approximately, 7,000 miles / yr road & dirt. New pair every 1.5 yrs. Don R100, A6F

Ditto on the Duck... Kenda will wear funny on the front ( half way remove and flip it ) but just happen to spot a 606 on a rack at (ahem..) another dealer down the road from where I worked and called them up, when my own supplier came up short getting me a Kenda. Anyhow I had already looked up the 606 cost ( not retail, but actual cost ) and the other shop quoted me my cost if I were to order it.. needless to say I said I would be right over... Do like the 606, unless your into knee dragging.. then you might also consider a different bike all to together. Dooden A15 Green Ape

I don't know what surfaces you're talking about for the high speed travel so I can't suggest too much. And on top of that I don't know anything about the Michelin T63 tires. I use Kenda K270 tires front and rear on my KLR and I try to ride within sensible limits on dirt and pavement. Maybe you could take a look at the K270 and compare tread patterns. I don't think I've ever exceed 60 mph in the dirt and that would be on a pretty well known path to go that kind of speed. On pavement I usually don't exceed 70 mph unless I'm passing a gaggle of bikes. I've never had issues with handling that I think is coming from the tires. The K270 rear will seem to walk out at the rear in a hard driven curve. I consider this a safety warning and throttle limiter helping me keep my enthusiasm in check. K270s are/were considered by Kenda to be a 50/50 tire. I know of at least one tire distributor that suggest they are more like an 80/20 tire meaning 80% pavement and 20% off pavement.
