final drive sprockets

Post by rainbowwarrior24us » Fri Nov 28, 2008 7:21 pm

I have a 06 klr have just lowered front sprocket from 15 to 14 teeth and it seems like I can still go lower. I am 6`3 230 pounds I need more grunt for the woods. Can I raise rear sprocket a few teeth and still use the same chain. Bike only have 2800 miles on it. ty never2old2ride

If it isn't the simple stuff like the throttle plate hung up, or gummed up cables, which it doesn't sound like it is since you day the throttle was returning normally, just not the revs, it may be a problem with the choke assembly or the slide diaphragm. da Vermonster

<><><><><><><><><> <><><><><><><><><> ty, I don't know the exact answer to your question but I've got an idea so you can make a good estimate yourself. I use a 14/46 sprocket combo on my KLR and have a 108 link chain. I can also run a 16/46 combo with that chain. The stock sprocket combo is 15/43 with a 106 link chain. You've put on a 14 tooth front which means you are using less chain and that moves the rear wheel backwards in the swing arm. If you added two teeth to the rear sprocket changing it from a 43 tooth to a 45 tooth you'd be moving the rear wheel forward in your swing arm. I'm thinking the 14 tooth moved it back a factor of 1 and changing to a 45 would move it forward a factor of 2. That would be an over all change from the stock position of forward a factor of 1. I'm betting that would work but you could take a look and see how much room for adjustment you have on your KLR. A lot of folks use a 45 tooth rear with good to great results for off pavement riding. Putting a 16 tooth front on with the 45 tooth rear is a bit over 1% taller than the stock 15/43 combination. My suggestion is to get a J T Sprocket steel rear sprocket with 45 teeth. I think any Parts Unlimited or Tucker Rocky dealer can get you one in only a few days. I would stay away from aluminum or exotic material rear sprockets. The aluminum won't normally hold up as well as the steel. The exotic materials usually cost more and you won't know the difference from a steel J T Sprocket.
