<><><><><><><><><><><> <><><><><><><><><><><> David, Don't breath the fumes from the flux core wire. As in treat it like the poison it is. Also using flux core wire you might find it handy to spray the area around where you'll be welding with anti-splatter stuff so the splatter won't stick to stuff you'd rather keep clean. I'd probably also shield the area with a few layers of aluminum foil. Kind of a belt and suspenders approach. And just as a reminder although you probably know... disconnect the battery before you start welding. tambourine sound
I had a similar problem with my '05.The chain is always in adjustment and lubed,I see to that constantly, but There was still an ever present noise not disimilar to a tambourine. It wasn't until a friend examined the chain closely and noticed that about 1/4 of the rollers on the chain were missing causing quite a bit of chain-slap,not to mention the wear on the sprocket! It had some pretty nice arched peaks and worn off nubs. I hadn't payed to close attention to the rest of the drive train! This was caused by too many wheelies on pavement in my case.I know...immature,but alot of fun since it was my first KLR and we all know they can wheelie for days! Maybe it was just mine, being red and all!
