no response to my question? ! steering column bearings.

This was a letdown. I posted a question regarding my steering column
bearings a few days ago. While a heated debate raged on about exhaust
pipes none of the experts who I was hoping to hear from could bother to
respond to my post. Boo Hoo!
You may now direct your Ire at this message because I fear that the
noisy pipe battle is loosing steam. I had used this forum site in the
past as a source for technical advise. This experience makes me dam
glad that I have both a Clymer Manual and a better than room
temperature IQ.

Did you follow the instructions in your Clymer manual under the heading "Steering Play and Adjustment"? You mentioned tightening to 24 lb-ft but I didn't see that torque value as part of the procedure.

I had to go back and look through my deleted messages to find your
previous post. The only question(s) I saw in it was...
"Have you ever had your steering syem nut just come loose? Mine did and
guess what?"
I didn't think it really mattered what had happened to my bike since my
bike is ridden and maintained differently from yours. But I understand
your disappointment at not getting any response to your post.
So in the spirit of cooperation... My steering bearing adjustment
changed this summer and was easily corrected.
No real pointers on how to change steering head bearings other than make
sure you have the bike weight off the front end when you take the front
end apart. But I'm guessing you already know that.
If you have trouble getting the lower outer race out of the steering head
you could maybe weld a large washer to the inside of the race to provide
a place to use a punch. Also you could weld a bead to the inside of the
race and when the weld cools the race will shrink and may fall out.
I usually find it helpful to cut the bearing cage and inner race apart on
the lower bearing. Then hit the cut on the inner race with a cold chisel
and hammer to crack it completely. Then it should slide right off the
steering stem.
A friend from NE told me a few months ago that he changed some steering
head bearings on a KLR using bearings from All Balls. I did a google
search on all balls and found a site with the bearings listed. I think
the price was very good and included seals if I recall correctly.

Well, hardyreels, it was not exactly right that you got NO reply, because I replied to you privately. From what it sounded like to me (don't mean to insult your intelligence, because I have been there and thought the same thing) the nut that got loose may have been the one that actually holds the handle bars down. Tightening it will not tighten the bearings at all.
Also, it is highly unlikely that the bearing are even bad. The bearings are like wheel bearings and can take a lot of use and abuse. It is most likely that the nut on top is loose and simply needs tightening. That is all that was wrong with mine. It did take better than an hour to do the job. About a month ago, I posted to the list a vidio that showed how to do it. I told you in my private letter that you could do a search on the web site and probably find it and that if you didn't find it get back with me. Just a search of my name (dated after August) will bring it up because I don't think I have posted since.
