I just started using the 17, so the answer would be no.
In that 34K miles that the factory chain (106 link) lasted, that was with the stock rear sprocket (43T) at all times. 2,000 mi with a 14T, 1,000 mi with a 15T, and 31K with 16T sprockets; first 16T lasted 15K (flipped it at 7500 mi), 2nd 16T lasted 15K (flipped it at 7500) and was on third 16T when the article was written at 34K miles. Still was using the third 16T at 38K when I just went to the first 17T a few weeks ago.
Hope this helps.
For those who don't know where the article is that you're referencing, it is one of the last posts at www.xanga.com/watt_man .
