bead breaking

Thanks for all the input on this problem that was plaqueing me. Apparently some of the comebacks didn't read " On the Trail " Ain't a lot I can't do here at the house. The 3 tire iron deal sounds good.. And I ride alone 99% of the time and never see hardly anyone when in the back country of the Ozarks. Gotta look out for your self and not do anything to stupid and end up as part of the food chain. Now , I gotta make a Call to Fred next time in. Time to spend some more money I guess ha ha ha.... -- Best Regards & Happy Trails Andy Chesley @ 57 and ticking Y2KLR650 @ 5.4K sMiles 97 R11RA (Amiga) @ 14K Miles So Many Roads, So Little Time http://members.deltech.net/aches/

It all depends on where your at if you can or cannot use the sidestand to break the bead. If your on a back road in south louisiana and or anywhere else where there isn't anything to prop your bike on, then you have a problem. Being as I do most all of my traveling alone and am not strong enuff to hold the bike up with no rear wheel on it to use the side stand on the bead and then put it back in place. I did have a piece of tubing I use on the right side of the bike to hold the rear wheel in the air to do such things. Unless you have a centerstand is one way out(which I have on the bike now). Other than that, how you gonna do this? You can keep working the tire irons and finally get the bead to break, just takes awhile. But I do carry a bead breaker also. Anybody try either the Motion Pro Tire Bead Popper or the Tire Bead Breaker, both available in the whitehorse catalog? I know the Tire machine in Harbor Freight has a Bead breaker lever but I am looking for something I can store more easily. Any other options? The tire on my GS really needed a bead breaker, does the smaller tire on the KLR need one or can you break it by kneeling on it?

Just use the kickstand to break that bead, works every time. You will need to have a centerstand though. Shane

I mainly run Mefo tires here in Colorado but when my wife and rode to Mexico/Central America I put Gripsters on. The Mefos almost fall off the rim but the Gripsters are something else, as in stuck on good. I had a slow lead down south and tried and tried to get the tire off by myself and couldn't. Then I took it to a tire shop who had a bit of a problem even with their air bead breaker but we finally got it done. Well when we got back to Utah, I was going to have Fred at Arrowhead Motor Sports put new Mefos back on and told him those Gripster beads were unbreakable. Well Fred, with his you don't know how to get these off look, showed me how with just two small tire irons you can get almost any tire off. The big trick is to just gently work the iron in just a bit and go around the tire, not trying to break the bead in one fell swoop. Nor does the tire iron go in all the way the first time around. Just a little bit at a time and within a couple of minutes the tire was off the rim. --- In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, "Christopher Eckert" wrote:

I break my beads with a tire spoon. Most bead-breakers are too bulky. The spoon gets most beads just by levering straight down. On the rest, I have to work my way around, twisting the head of the spoon between rim and bead. Some go easier than others, but they almost always yield. The D606s are easy to work with. I more often have trouble with the K270s, especially if they have been on the rim for a while. Tubeless tires are harder, but I don't use any tubeless types on my DS bikes. The spoon is reliable enough that I see no need to carry a bulky bead breaker around, or even to keep track of its location at home. If I ever start doing many tubeless tires again, I'll set up my HF changer and use its bead breaker.

Sorry Stu. I'm in love with Sarah, but she just brings the political animal out in me. I actually went to the store today to see if I could find a Caribou Barbie. They told me ACORN bought the entire shipment, and replaced them with Pam Grier Coffey dolls, the "baddest one-chick hit-squad that ever hit town!". R

And let's face it, everyone knows EVERYTHING on the internet is 100% true. I already voted, so I have no dog in this hunt, but it is sad to see otherwise reasonable people whipped into a hateful frenzy of fear and confusion over what should be a proud moment, exercising our sacred privilege to vote. Vote your conscience and be happy, man. Thanks CA Stu [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
