BMW motorcycle Owners puts out the "Anonymous" book with people listed by location and what they can do for you. For example, there are codes for "have garage and tools" or "spare bed" or "coffee and conversation". It works great according to stories I've heard. It's got thousands of entries. It takes a lot of time and effort. It is a good idea, and has been brought up before. A lot of groups have tried something similar, but none with as much success as BMW Anonymous, which has been around for at least 20 years. The internet and the ease of access to it may have rendered it obsolete, however. More than once, this forum and others have been able to arrange real-time assistance to travelers with mechanical problems. A list may prove unnecessary when every forum has dozens of members who may be willing and able to step in and help at any given time.

My preference would be to keep it a focused group like this forum and keep it a 'highly-respected' resource...NOT another forum or some general index. I think focused on the KLR makes it a more effective and efficient. Anyway, we have a group here which makes it a bit easier to assemble and the web offers some great tools. I think I found the solution. I'm not sure how active the Complete Phonebook database is, but SOMEONE must know about it. If you look left you'll see in the blue box a list of links including "Database." Click on it, and then scroll down the list and find "Complete Phonebook". Click on it and add your details. I just added mine so it works. Or try this link: http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/DSN_KLR650/database? method=reportRows&tbl=5 This seems like it'll work perfectly. Next it would be nice to put everyone on a Frappr map perhaps in the Links. Listas, what do you think? Brian

I had completely forgotten about that database. It was created several years ago. As I recall, its purpose was exactly as you have suggested. I don't know that it has ever been used. As it turns out I have been involved more than once in helping out a traveler online, when they have posted either here or on klr650.net looking for assistance on the road. I have either given or arranged for mechanical assistance, and provided lodging to traveling KLRists in response to contacts made through online forums. A list of phone numbers was unnecessary, as anyone offering help could easily post a number in response to a query. I suppose that carrying a printed copy of that database might prove helpful, however, if you ever found yourself broken down and without internet access. BMW Anonymous had another feature that seemed pretty cool at first blush: an 800 number that you could call to contact people in the directory (in case you didn't have your book with you) or to leave messages in order to hook up with friends on the road, at rallies, etc. But since everybody carries a cell phone now, and with internet almost universally available in libraries and cafes, the 800 service seems superfluous. In any case, I still carry my BMW Anonymous book with me on tour, even though I have never had occasion to use it.

In the footer of every listmessage there is a reference to "Member Map at: http://www.frappr.com/dsnklr650". I have been in the BMW Owners Group and have carried the anonymous book. I think it is great because internet isn't always available. However, it would be a lot of work to put out such a book. I think the database pointed out here is a good second choice and is a LOT easier to maintain. It's a good first step.
