My KLR makes noise and I need advise as to how to stop it.
When on a bumpy road the speedometer, so it seems, rattles badly.
However, I can support it with my hand and there seems to still be
rattle--maybe something else too. Anyone else have the same problem?
What to do to fix it?

Check if steering nut (big nut) is loose under the handlebars. This is
a common source of such a noise. If it is, mark the position of your
bars. Then remove the 4 small bolts (heads hidden under caps) that
hold the handlebars in place and obstruct this nut. Lock-tite the big
nut and tighten it to 31 ft-lbs. Torque the 4-bolts to 17.5ft lbs.
If it still makes noise, sell the bike to me for $500 and buy a new one
that doesn't.

Check if the speedo assembly is loose, it might rattle against the mounts.

Thanks ...I gave the HD part number and the original part to the owner. My first choice is to replace rather than temporarily fix.

WV,
I've heard of guys using part of a condom and super glue to fix a torn
diaphragm while on tour. Also using just super glue might work. But
since you have the carb apart why not consider going to the local Harley
or V-Twin independent shop and getting a new slide with diaphragm for
about $50 or so. They've probably got it on the shelf and it will be
much less expensive than buying it from Kawasaki. Ask for the slide and
diaphragm for an 883 Sportster. I'd bring the old one along for
comparison but it should be the same part.
Best,
