Time to do the doo and change the tires. Need to either buy a jack or
build some stands, curious as to what the experienced KLRista uses
before I waste time/money.

Originally, I bought one of the Sears steel motorcycle jacks. But then
I got up close with the Sears aluminum jacks. Hmm, very light and easy
to move. Since I work on two KLR's at the same time, my wife's and
mine, I bought two of them. I love them. My steel one resides at
Fred's shop in Moab now, ready for the Canyonlands Motor Classic.

I recommend a center stand. I'm yet to see anyone carrying their jack
with them riding.
Of course, you don't need a center stand to change a rear tire in the
field...unless you're like me and prefer to do it with the smile.
Brian - who recommends always doing it with a smile

Just lean the bike over on it and the guts you want to work on are right in front of you and no need to change/drain the oil. For tire changes I use a center stand but have also used a 2x4 across a couple of buckets with the engine over the board. It's not as stable as I'd like but it does work. ~~~Hello Borg, Jake is following this thread and thought he would (sorry for the 3rd person speak=:-) throw his 2 cents in... I've probably had 4 different forks apart in the last 8 years and always used a water based degreaser for cleaning, hence a water flush and chased the big droplets out with compressed air. Never gave much thought to water contamination but on the other hand, I never let water puddle in the bottom of the leg (turned it upside down). It got rinsed, blew it out with compressed air, no water contamination issues that I was aware of OEM seals on Showa forks has always been the way to go someone mentioned using a fork seal driver. I like and use PVC tubing, larger in diameter than the seal I'm trying to fit so I'll cut a slit in the end of the tubing (running with the tube) and neck it down to diamter that's called for via a hose clamp, tap, tap, tap w/a mallet. Cheap and cheerful http://www.geocities.com/sh8knj8kster/page7 Mandatory KLR content: The right fork seal on my 08' leaked shortly after purchase. I let the tech at the dealer I bought it from replace it under warranty, along with some other warranty issues at the time. Seals will leak. I was told about the 35 mm film negative route but I didn't bother with it. Thought it plausible though. And like the OP said, if the film technique tech tip doesn't work, you can always replace the seal Jake Reddick Fla.> on or not. I'm betting he doesn't. > > Best, > > Jeff Saline > ABC # 4412 South Dakota Airmarshal > Airheads Beemer Club www.airheads.org > The Beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota > 75 R90/6, 03 KLR650, 79 R100RT >
