I hit a deer last January, broke six ribs, spent a week in hospital and five more weeks being vewy vewy quiet. Messed up the (Buell) headlight and bracket and broke one turn signal. The deer got up and ran away. In retrospect, my attempt to swerve and miss it may have been a bad choice. Given my '08 KLR and a smallish deer, I'd be more tempted next time to loft the front wheel and try to hit it with the skid pan. (I was riding at under 30mph -- obviously at a higher speed I'd have more limited choices.) Here in Maine, the official advice to motorists from the state police about moose is: if you can't avoid the collision, aim for the hindquarters, because at least you won't pass under the moose and destroy the cab of your vehicle; in a good-sized car or truck, you'll stand a better chance of staying alive. On a bike, it wouldn't matter much ... but it's something to remember if you find yourself looking at a sub-100-pound deer. Reminds me of a buddy in CA who hid the deer and the force make it shoot up on the hood and right through the windshield, enough to make the guy crap his pants before stopping and getting out of the truck, BTW the deer didnt survive and the photos of the deer partly inside the truck cab are scary! Should be something like a locomotive cattle thing you could put on your truck that would scoop them up and shoot them to the side!
