revmaatin gdr update monday 15 sept
Listers,
I just got off the phone with Martin. He's north of Breckenridge, CO
heading toward Del Norte. He and his riding partner decided to miss a
bit of very fun beautiful dirt since there was a deep water crossing on
that part of the route. They took pavement around Steamboat Springs and
Kremmling.
Martin's ankle hurts but he's doing ok. I can't imagine what his
partner's ankle feels like since it's fractured.
Turns out there were only four in the group to start. On day two they
split into pairs and one of the "other" pair split at Pinedale (I think
that's WY) to return home. The other guy rode it alone and Martin is
guessing he's probably off the trail by now.
Martin said they are having a lot of fun but being careful since both of
them are hurting. : )
I stopped at the local dealer this morning to order fork seals for him
and they had them in stock. So I have his fork seals here waiting for
his arrival in maybe 7-8 days. He said his clutch is more like an on/off
switch now and that's even with fresh oil. He asked me to order clutch
parts for him so we can replace his clutch when he gets here too. The
local dealer said it would take until Monday to get the clutch parts here
so that should work fine. Two or three day delivery on the order was $42
and overnight was $62. Since Martin's not here was certainly don't need
to spend the extra bucks on this.
Martin expects to be calling me this evening to let me know how things
are going. Hopefully his bike will continue to move and his clutch will
hold out for the entire trip.
For whatever it's worth... Martin is using Rotella 15w/40 and the guy
that trashed his clutch was/is using Castrol GTX. Martin said they
haven't been slipping the clutches too much but have been putting a lot
of strain on them. He also told me I'd be impressed when he shows me the
pictures of the trashed clutch.
More once I know more.
Best,

I'm on the western side of Colorado but if those guys have
catastrophic failure, I can go rescue them and their bikes with my
trailer. Plus I have lots of tools for repairs.

anybody need a helmet?

Years ago a motorcycle rag tested quite a few helmets and the least expensive one, the one mentioned above was the clear winner, if I recall one of the tests was to setup the helmet in a rig and drop a large weight directly on it and measure the pressure, cracks, etc from it, it out performed the most expensive lids made!
