Can't help you with a bike, as I don't live in the area, but +1 on the idea to visit some Civil War sites. Gettysburg is great, but also consider Antietam, Chancellorsville, Manassas junction, Fredricksburg. You can see a lot in a couple of days.

+1 on the concept/initiative, but considering the legal b/s in this country, it seems rather risky to loan out machines, no? It's too bad because in many countries you simply rent a moto cheaply and cruise all over not worrying about legal b/s like here. KLRing around might be optimal but for all the trouble I'd rent a small car and charge as business expense. If it's raining in DC (common) you'll want a car anyway. My insurance policy covers anyone that rides my bike for liability only. So I run the risk of theft, collision etc. I m not too worried about that risk simple lowspeed offroad drops aren t going to break anything that I haven t already broken once or twice. The most I can lose if the bike is stolen is the value of the bike. I can afford to be self-insured for that small risk. I have rented bikes in England and Italy and it s no trouble if you have an international driving license with a motorcycle endorsement. You can get those at many motor club offices for $15 (Ensure that they stamp the b ox indicating that you have the endorsement, they are not used to issuing licenses to motorcyclists and don t stamp this box even if you show up on a bike in full gear). I have rented bikes in the US as well, it s hard to find a bike other than a cruiser though not impossible. Rain is not an issue, I ride and commute year-round in Seattle and wear nearly waterproof Aerostitch gear. I bring my own gear on the plane as checked baggage, it rides nicely in a rollable Pelican case, The swaps that I have done so far have resulted in nothing but new riding buddies and new friends. Maybe I have been lucky but maybe we riders *are* really one big community that look out for each other. Maybe I am na ve, but I believe the latter. The total cost would be about $125, or less. Any input on why this is a good or bad idea would be appreciated. Ten+ years ago, being a then recent convert to Thermarest air mattresses, I looked at the rest of the line and found a kyak seat pad made w/ the same technology as the sleeping pads. The thing has 4 or six attaching loops and an air valve Just looked at the current inventory, and the attaching loops have transitioned to Velcro tabs. Could work better. (?) I got some light duty straps from the same folks and strapped this on to my /7 seat. Night and day difference! By unweighting the seat/or not, and opening the air valve, the self inflation or easy deflation function of the pad does it's thing one can instantly change the feel and contact points of the seat pad. Works like a cool damn. (no hot spots butt) The good news: last I looked the pads were around $50. Now $39.95 The bad news: Last I looked the only color they came in was blue. No change here.
