cruise control for a klr?

Post by Tom Dudones » Wed Sep 10, 2008 4:01 pm

Does anyone know if a "cruise control/throttle lock" can be rigged up on a KLR650? I've tried the models listed in the Aerostich catalog - there are 3 different ones - but was told by the 'stich sales person that none of them were listed for the KLR. Somebody must have one! It would be great to relieve the constant need to hang on to the right hand gip for hour after hour on a long trip. So, any ideas? I used a "VistaCruz" which I got from Arrowhead Fred on my '99. When I got the '08 I bought another, and it works. Your Aerostitch guy might be right that they aren't *_listed_ *as fitting the KLR, but Fred can straighten out that problem. DC Tom Dudones wrote:Tom Dudones

An o-ring approximately 2.25" in diameter by 3/32" will act as a throttle drag when looped between the flange of the twist grip and the throttle housing and over the brake lever. It does not affect braking at all, and can be disengaged with a simple swipe of a finger. Cost: $0.89. You can achieve the same thing with a small bungie.

The Vista-Cruise will work. The only mod you have to do is to drill and tap a small hole in the bottom of the throttle cable housing to allow for a spot to secure the Vista-Cruise to. It's a simple mod I'd rank right up with the LED turn signals and the Odyssey Battery in ease-of-install. Another thing to consider is one of those palm throttle-helpers so you can twist the throttle with your palm/heel of your hand. The drawback is that you need to 'gear' your throttle so you don't need to twist it a full turn to get somewhere. On the stock KLR you need to use so much throttle that you end up interfering with your fingers twisting the throttle either at idle or at full throttle.

Tom - I run a velcro attached Throttle Rocker. It's not cruise control but it dramatically improved things for me. I just did 4k+ miles in 9-days and my wrist was giving me the bird! I used it on a 5k miler to Baja and loved it. And for $10-ish plug-n-play, I highly recommend it.

swap use of your klr in washington dc 20-21 september for use of my

Hi KLRistas I had a trip planned to Washington, DC for business the week of the 22nd of this month but just found out that I also have a meeting in DC on Friday the 19th. So I have to either fly home to Seattle Friday night and return to DC again on Monday morning or stay the weekend in DC. I'm going to stay the weekend in DC rather than spend 11 hours flying. I'd like to borrow a KLR or similar for the weekend of the 20st and 21nd for day trips to historical points of interest in the DC area (Gettysburg NHS?). I'd like to swap use of your KLR in the DC area for this weekend for the use of my KLR (or something else in my stable) in Seattle, at a time of your choosing. My KLR has the fathead 685 kit on it and is both well farkled and well traveled (~52k smiles) If anyone is interested in this swap, please contact me OFF list rather than spamming the list with messages related to this swap. ( Bogdan I marked this message NKLR as a courtesy although it is *somewhat* KLR related) [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Thanks to all for the tips. I'm ordering the VC from 'stich and will do the "tap in" for the set screw. I've tried the Throttle Rocker, and it does help, but I still can't remove my right hand from the grip while underway. So I'll give the VC a try. Thanks.
