ratty old bike - part out or sell whole

If you had a ratty, worn-out, yet fully functional KLR that you
no longer wanted, would you sell it complete or would you part it
out on eBay?
My experience suggests that the eBay route would fetch quite a
bit more money.

RM,
If I had the time, space and energy to part it out I think you're correct
that overall you'd get more money. But I'm thinking you wouldn't be
paying yourself much for your time.
I'd probably have to take a look at the major components and make a
decision. Stuff that I think would sell quickly for a pretty sum might
be:
- engine complete (no carb)
- carb
- front wheel complete with rotor and speedo drive
- rear wheel complete with rotor and sprocket and all spacers
- CDI
- radiator
- forks complete with triple tree but taken out of the tree for shipping
- instrument cluster
- seat
- frame with swing arm and clear title
If I thought I could make more money selling these parts and pay myself
$30 per hour for my effort I'd probably consider that route. If a few of
these parts were really trashed I'd probably try to sell the bike
complete and just get rid of it.
If I sold it in pieces I'd make darn sure I didn't need any of the parts
for myself. All the rest of the parts I'd probably put in lots and sell
related parts together.
But I'm thinking if the bike is so trashy you don't want it assembled...
well, how much are you going to get for the individual parts.
Best,
Jeff Saline

I'm with you, Jeff. Most people fail to value properly their time.
They'll drive 100 miles for $.05 pencils.
Arguably, I would get rid of it and move on. If you let the bike
become ratty out of neglect, then it's your own fault. If the bike has
served you well and simply grown old 'gracefully', then I'd feel very
good giving it to someone with fiery passion looking to breath new life
and spark into it. Look at all the wonderful places the KLR takes us.
Someone on a budget could fix it up and enjoy the same. Frankly, this
is the spirit of the KLR. In any event, selling a used KLR in whole or
parted has never been a long-term, successful financial endeaver. I
wouldn't suggest anyone commit themselves otherwise trying to disprove
this axiom.

It was from an online vendor but I lost the details when my hard drive
crashed and my latest hard drive backup was more than a year old!
That's what happens when you get lazy about backups.
It was a vendor in California who added sales tax, so the total was $215.00.

Any idea of what your clapped-out KLR is worth as a whole, or what
you'd ask for it?
