08 klr 650 engine seized

Post by AnanthR » Mon Aug 11, 2008 11:29 pm

My 08 KLR 650 seized on the freeway today. There was virtually no oil left in the reservoir. I had changed the oil at 2200 miles and put in 2.5 ltr of 20W50. I was going to take it in for a 4000 mile service tomorrow but the engine quit before that ~sigh~. Lesson learnt the hard-way, do check the oil level every time you start up fellas. Also learnt, my 08 KLR is definetly a oil burner. I just wanted to find out what my options are at this stage. I don't know if I can claim warranty on the bike, its just over one year old ( 1 year and 15 days ~sigh~). Any rough ideas on how much it might be to get it fixed ?

If you bought it locally (hope so) take it back and let them try to get it covered under warr. 08's have a known problem with oil, Kawi released replacement rings to help cure that issue, if your nice to the service manager he/she can put in for it an push the fact of the known oil issuses. I would try to run it through KHI for some Warr work. Never hurts to ask, butcan plan on being w/o the bike for awhile. Dooden A15 Green Ape

My Guzzi LeMans did the same thing when I went to lighter springs on top of the slides. The KLR carb has a vacuum slide, so it can't be the springs. I would suspect a vacuum issue or a sticking slide. Given what you have gone through, my suspicions would incline to the slide or the bore. Does the slide move freely in the bore? Inspect for rough spots, varnish, or anything else that could interfere with free movement. Try massaging the bore and slide with a little Simichrome on the fingertip, then wipe clean.
