nklr need help with a concours

Post by thewildmanrides650 » Wed Jul 23, 2008 7:07 pm

picked up a 1999 concours with 13000 miles seemed to run good. noticed a slight skip at speeds over 55mph,in 3500rpm to 4000rpm range.went through the carbs and adjusted the air fuel mixture screws to two turns out.tried shimming the carbs also. changed out the plugs, put new ngk plug caps on also changed out the coils and wires. Just got done changing out the ignitor. also drained the tank and cleaned the fuel petcock. Also adjusted the valves.checked the tank vent it always seems to be whistling a little tune.tried running with gas cap open and in prime position made no difference.after doing all that the bike seems to run great, with great throttle responce, with only an ocassional flutter untill i get on the four lane highway and try to do 70mpm then it misses and runs poorly. At 70 mph it has a big throttle lag and then seems to be ok at full throttle.Hoping there is someone out there that can advise me.

Almost sounds like a vacuum leak. Baffles between carbs and cylinders perhaps? Any hoses on the vacuum side of the carbs? There really isn't much to go wrong with them, it's basically the ZX9R engine, which is remarkably simple. Yours is just buried in more plastics. :) As for the carbwork, are they all synced? What is the air/fuel mixture out of each carb? That's where I'd chase it down. //Reverend

It got so bad I feared that it would quit. But mainly, it would be a very slight miss--enough to make my head go forward a bit. Got off the Interstate and slowed down a bit and have had no problem since. I brought it up here but got no replies. Now that someone else seems to have experienced the same thing I will regain some credibility. KLR-650 10K rw [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

I drove one of those while in the Air Force and wish you luck with your sale. Good truck. Bad memories. Stephen
