off topic atv question

They are allowed in some states here too, 3rd world or not. :) Arizona allows them, and I suspect with the regular nomenclature regarding lights/horns and all that getup. Some parts/towns in Colorado "tolerates" them - i.e the ranchers can take'em to the store and stuff.

Ok, bear in mind I don't ride a KLR. In the AM I will be poking my fingers into an 06 KLR with 9k miles. Valves have never been adjusted, oil is changed regularly, nor the bike abused. Today he was riding the bike down a slope on a dirt road, around 15mph and most likely below 2k rpm from what he has told me. The engine began to "rattle" and quit running. Engine will still turn over and there is no rod sticking out the bottom, and muffler bearing is still rotating freely. When engine is cranked, carb pumps in and out on the manifold. My first assumption is that the bike jumped valve timing. Now for my questions. 1: For those of you familiar with the beast, is there a common failure where I should begin looking. 2: "Doohicky" is unrelated to timing? 3: IF the bike has jumped timing, will valves clear piston crown? 4: Does anyone have a link to a scanned manual? Yeah, I know, copyright blah blah blah. Any help to help me "pre" troubleshoot will be appreciated by myself and Jim. E

If the cam timing changes enough, the valves can hit the piston, or vice versa. Broken "doohickey" springs have been known to go through the cam chain and cam chain sprockets, changing the timing. Occasionally a piece of the doo/lever itself has also done this, but the spring does it more often. the lever/doo more often causes issues in the transmission - if one is unlucky enough for the broken part to do damage. I know of several people that had the broken spring cause a cam timing change. Take a look at this site. It also has a lot of useful links. The marknet site has some detailed maintenance info. On the valve adjustment, if the valve clearance is over spec, the valves are bent.
