If you keep the rpm's up it wont die. It idles right along and then just dies like you shut it off. It is hard starting after that. Any ideas?

Start with pilot jet and valve clearances.>

Start with the easy stuff first, like bad gas, clogged air cleaner, etc.
Did it start acting up after a fill-up? Doesn't seem like you let it
sit much (11K / one yr). Try some dry gas additive to see if you have
water in the carb. You should have cleaned / re-oiling the air cleaner
by now too.
Do you think any dirt got inside the gas and carb?
I agree with Jud, you should have had the valves adjusted at least once
and possibly twice in 11K. They valves settle down after that and need
checked every 10K or so.

Bingo! Ding ding ding!
I drained the tank, float bowl and it seems to be riding fine. Should I go back to the station and complain?

I'm kind of surprised that stations have water getting in their
underground gas tanks. In the late 80s-early 90s, all single walled
tanks should have been pulled and replaced with double-walled with
leak detection in the void between the walls. Also, each tank needs
to be leak checked periodically.
So, you might be doing them a favor by telling them that water was in
the gas. If water can get in the tank, gas can get out and the
environmental clean-up costs could wipe them out. Even if they don't
have a leaking tank, maybe the water came in with a delivery and the
supplier might be adding an "extender" to the loads (all reads the
same through the flow meter) or they are the origin of the leak, so
someone should be notified. Try to write a letter to the owner not
talk to a part-timer behind the counter.

I had the same situation with my KLR and it was/is dirt in the floatbowl
which makes the float stick. When it does start (no choke,part-open
throttle?) does it give you a puff of smoke out the tailpipe? Mine does when
it's flooded due to a stuck float.
It's time to clean my tank.

Go back to the station and say that you drank heavily last night and would
like to pee in there tanks so you can help them improve the usefulness of
the fuel they sold you.
Or,,,, and this might be the more appropriate answer, ask for them to
refund the cost of their selling you gas full of water adding that you will
cover the cost of the time it took to drain it and make the vehicle run
again. Since you didnt have it towed or fixed in a shop you own that part
anyways since there is no reciept for services to have them refund. If they
refuse then call the state regulatory group that tests and certifies fuel
pump equipment and file a complaint. You should look up who this is in your
state before going to ask for your refund so you can explain what you intend
to do if they refuse the refund.
They generaly will refund your money before risking the state coming out to
test their tanks and pumps

I am having the same problem with my 1999. But I am half way through a tank, so I don't know that it is the gas. Could it be something else? I drained the float bowl, checked all my vaccum lines and fuel lines. Someone suggested it could be the low speed idle jet.....
Any suggestions.
