weird speedo problem

Hey all, I could be paranoid, but I don't think so... I've developed a front-end squeal at any speed over 20 mph on my '08 (about 3500 miles on it). It's not loud, but it's irritating. It sounds a LOT like a brake pad squeal, but the pads and rotor seem fine (although the outer pad is really hard to see). It doesn't matter if I'm on the brakes or not, the squeal is still there and doesn't seem to get any louder or quieter. It usually takes about 10 minutes of riding before it shows up, then it's pretty constant. There's no noticeable affect on how the bike handles, but I'd hate to learn the hard way that it's smthng important. Any ideas of what I should be looking for before I pull the wheel off? Sounds reasonable. Is that smthng a reasonably technically minded monkey can handle without seriously screwing the pooch? You're in luck...unlike previous models, the 2008's come with a wrench to fit the front axle. Removing/re-installing the front wheel is pretty simple, the only real hitch is getting the speedo drive aligned properly on the wheel and with the cable, and making sure the little stops on it fit over the nubbin on the fork tube. You could start by unbolting the caliper and looking for foreign matter on the brake pads, though I can't think of why it would take some time to start squealing. I wouldn't put off looking into a possible brake issue for too long, and some day you'll need to change brake pads. Think of this as a learning opportunity 8~) __Arden

Have you greased the speedometer attachment on the front wheel? Some come dry from the factory... Needs to be greased when ever you have the front wheel off for tire change. Mike H.

Hello Carl, Ouch! What is especially helpful here on the list is, "What I learned..." Thanks for reporting. One thing to think/comment about...was the speedo failure an internal mechanical failure or was in 'owner-mechanic' induced failure, ie, incorrectly installed wheel, leading to the failure? Many here have shared the difficulty of their first time, front-wheel installation and their difficulty of alignment of the speedo tabs--leading to the speedo failure. It's not hard if you know the alignment points! (Unless it is in the dark, or in the rain, or being consumed by a mosquito horde. Then it is a little more adventure!) On a positive note: you will get a lot better 'indicated' gas mileage with the old wheel than with the new one. cough. When using the 'broken-tab' wheel: Be very careful to mark you miles- traveled with your GPS so that you don't find yourself stranded, or trying to remember where the KLR hides the double-secret fuel reserve. After lifting the bike the 2d time while tapping the secret reserve, hoping for 1-2 more miles squeezed from the right side of the gas tank, your memory will be a whole lot sharper at remembering to reset the miles-traveled on the GPS. revmaaatin.

Kind of hard to tell if you're being serious or yanking my chain here. Either way, I doubt it has anything to do with the doo, as the squeal is there even while coasting with the engine off. Anyway, I checked the faq before posting... no mention of a squeal that applies to me, or anything about speedo other than breaking the tabs when you install a wheel.

Is this simply a case of undoing the cable and squeezing some grease in there, or do I need to pull the entire wheel and grease everything?
