I'm speaking of myself. I went to Wal-Mart. I hopped off the bike, put on the steering lock, pulled out the key and sat it down on my seat. I then took off and secured my helmet, gloves, etc. I did my thing in the store and walked back out to my bike. My key was still sitting there on my seat! Doh! I least I didn't have to pay the stupid tax. Surely I'm not the only idiot who has done this! :o) Don+ [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

seat! Doh! Never left it on the seat, but left it in the ignition of the bike once -- overnight, parked beside a Motel 6 a thousand miles from home. Of course, my KLR is so ugly that someone who wanted to steal it would need a really warped sense of aesthetics. It looks like a total beater. It is, of course, in perfect mechanical condition, but the battered plastics, fine coat of mud, the chain oil dripping out from under the engine sprocket cover (I like to joke that my KLR marks its territory like a tomcat) and all that makes it look like it wouldn't make it halfway down the block without disintegrating or dumping its full load of oil onto the pavement. Sorta like dressing up like a homeless guy if you wanna be left alone, I guess...

My wife for some reason left a spare key to my cherry '93 Miata in the package tray (unbeknownst to me) and someone cut a hole in the top just to see what I had in the car. The dummy didn't steal it. Might of been grounds for divorce had they stolen it. Insurance paid for a new top. Only dumb stuff I have done on the KLR is riding off with the kick stand down. Criswell

Ah, living the life of the anointed. At least you did not attempt to add oil with the drain plug 'out' (= of oil on the floor) or start the bike with the filler cap off. (= oil spray on your leg) or forget to put the gas to 'on' after arriving at the gas station in 'reserve' (=grumpy words and a push-pig for a motorcycle; thank goodness for the double secret reserve in the right side of the tank). Or a myriad of other KLR SNAFU events. revmaaatin. not that I have done any of the above, cough, more than once.

When my bike was a week old I rode it to the jail to visit clients. Left key in ignition and on! Came out 2 hours later and there it was. Criminals roaming all around, there to visit their criminal family members and friends. I then did it at least one more time, just not in the on position. That and riding off from a gas station in Juarez, with my wallet on the top case. Yeah, the wallet with all my money, credit cards, ID, etc. After 45 mintues trying to find the funky little station in a funky little neighborhood I learned that someone had turned it in to the clerk, minus the money, but everything else was there. I should be buying more lottey tickets with this kind of luck. Robert Hedrick Albuquerque, NM

How about replacing the front pads and failing to torque down the caliper bolts only to lose them going down a pass? I zip-tied the caliper to the mounts and actually found replacements at a local hardware store as all bike shops were closed (Monday). Or drop a nut (stainless steel, non magnetic) down an open fork tube....twice. I had taken the fork caps off to replace the oil. When I went to replace the caps, I found the bottom edge of the dashboard was in the way. In taking the nuts loose, I fumbled one and it went right down the fork tube.....much swearing. Took the front wheel off, took the fork tube off, dumped contents into a measuring cup, herd the nut hit the bottom of the cup, good. Replace the fork tube, replace the wheel, grab the cup, dump the fork oil back in, along with the nut..... Did I mention MUCH swearing? Dave C

How about standing back and feeling really good about your first swingarm and rear suspension service until you notice that you forgot to loop your OEM endless chain through the swingarm before you reinstalled it. AAAARRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!! ed A17

I think the best one I've seen wasn't done by me...when I was younger and still living at my parents my mom woke me on a weekend morning from not nearly enough sleep because a buddy of mine had according to him a very big problem. Anyway he drags me still trying to wake up to the garage where is is working on his bike, checking the valves on his new CBX. He managed to drop a washer I believe it was down into the cam chain cavity. Just seeing all 24 valves in this beast is impressive without looking down inside the engine and seeing a washer perched on a little ledge way down inside. A dab of 5 minute epoxy on the end on a coat hanger and we, or I should say he, there was no way I was going to be the one to knock it the rest of the way down into the crankcase and as I remember about 10 minutes or so to allow the epoxy to cure....had to make a small error in time keeping since he did get me out of bed eh.... :-) and the washer was retrieved. No problems except for friend with slightly cramped hand and shoulder. Have wondered many times when I think of this or he mentions this how many times say out of a 1000 you could drop a washer in there and have it land on the little ledge and actually not knock it in farther when you try to get it out.....Have a great day all.....Greg
