That is the way it is supposed to be. A car has a roof. Putting it in the garage is a waste of roofage.

how does heat affect the cdi box?

Post by Gary » Sun Jun 22, 2008 10:55 am

I need some sage advice...but since i dont know any sages I am asking my KLR brothers. I am experimenting with a KLX650 right side radiator and the cooling system filled with Engine Ice.All the electricals under the tank had to be moved. Instead of making wiring harnesses to move the CDI box to a remote location I simply cut up the factory mounting bracket and mounted the CDI box and most of the electrical plugs on the stock CDI bracket but I turned the bracket sideways and bolted it to one of the existing holes in the top of the KLR overflow jug bracket. The CDI box is about 2 inches behind the radiator and will catch a good bit of heat from the radiator. Is the heat going to kill the CDI box?Any thoughts? I have heard of people using the KLR250 right side radiator because it is small enough to mount and not have to move all the electronics but I already had a slightly smushed KLX 650 radiator ,so i used that. So far so good. I just took it for a test ride and went off road on some logging trails that require 1st/2nd gear while standing on the footpegs to pick a way through the rough stuff. The temp needle never went above 1/4 way up. When I got back on the main roads and some air started moving through the radiators at about 35-40 mph...the temp needle dropped so fast I could literally see it moving.I could not believe my eyes really. After years of being annoyed by the pathetic factory radiator I may have finally found the silver bullet. The only problem I can forsee is the possibility that the heat may kill the CDI box. If it does I will make plug and play wiring harnesses to move it down to the bottom of the overflow tank bracket in the same place Jeff Saline put his CDI box
