how long does a klr last?
All,
I was curious, how many miles does everyone get out of there KLR's until
you start running into serious issues.
By serious issues, I mean throwing a rod, transmission blowing up,
etc... At what mileage (roughly) does some sort of part break on the KLR
that is more expensive to fix then the bike is worth?
I know if you are a gear head like myself, you are constantly replacing
bad parts and keeping the bike in top notch shape. But even then
typically you can only get 250,000 miles of a typical ford car before it
starts dying.
Does anyone have input on this? I personally have a hair over 32,000
miles on my bike, 5,000 of them are mine. The engine is on its 1st
oversize piston and has had a couple seals replaced, other then the 1st
oversize piston and rings, the bike has not had any serious issues (From
what the previous owners have told me which are fairly credible)

You are probably good to at least 50,000 miles or more. If the top end
was rebuilt before 32,000 miles, it may not have been maintained as good
as it could have been, and/or ridden hard and put up wet. But then
again, 25,000 miles and then a top end rebuild is not unreasonable if
the bike spent a lot of time at high rpms, even if the oil was changed
regularly.
Many KLRs go 50,000 miles or more without any major surgery. A few get
to 100,000 (or more) on original engine components.

While there are several KLRista who claim 100K plus miles the average
seems to be more like 70,000. If I had that kind of miles on mine and
the trans or some other major component wore out I think it would be
more economical to just buy another used one.

In my experience, about 60K miles before things get weird. It will
run after that, but you don't trust it like you used to.

I agree 100%. My klr at about 60k is breaking in interesting and imaginative ways. I don't trust it very much these days.

torque for filter cover
Somebody asked about this a couple of days ago, (I'm on the road and can't remember exactly when). My 08 Service Manual says 78 INCH pounds. That is six and a half foot pounds if you like.
This is a conversion that comes up every now and then as a problem because it was misread, and if you put 78 ft lbs on those little screws, they should be sticking out the far side.
Having a ball on this trip, It is slightly shorter than the 4 Corners, but I am slightly older to compensate.
