was 08klr purchase - how to get better gas milage
You dont get that much extra mpg by over inflating the tires, about 10%
over listed air pressue gets you some milage but then it stops buying
you anything. Over inflating will cost you some breaking and turning
grip though. Changing tires can do a lot. When I went to two single
center bead front tires on my mpg experimental bike, see
www.getbettermpg.org, the milage jumped up more than I expected. I road
on a single thin strip of rubber with those tires so there was no tread
patern involved until I turned. That lowered the rolling resistance a
lot.
Gear Up!!! running the engine at lower rpm and going real easy on the
acceleration helps a lot. also get into high gear fast and early with
out accelerating really hard. That with a steady hand while
accelerating is the hands down biggest bang for the buck in saving gas.
It also orks with every vehicle, not just the bike.
Less barn door. You wont make a KLR aero dynamicaly clean but you can
remove big energy drains. someone on the list already saidarms and legs
in and they were very correct. Park it nose into the wind on a windy
day and sit on it. Moves you legs and arms around and see how much you
feel it pulling on you. Beyond those two things you arent going to get
much aero dynamic help on a klr unless you plan to wrap a fairing
around it
I plan to put together a second set of wheels for the KLR, rear with
higher gear sprocket and both with lower rolling resistance tires.
Those would be for trips or if I am not going to play ride for a while.
It isnt so hard to swap wheels for the weekend.
Get off the throttle early, clutch in or neutral and coast down to stop
lights. Every time you use the brakes you burn off energy you used gas
to store. I have been working on a rear wheel with a one way drive like
on a bisycle wheel. With it I can kill the engine when I am coasting.
Without it the wheel is turning the secondary side of the tranny but
not the primary which is where oil is pumped, not good if you plan to
spend lots of time coasting. I have neutral between 4th and 5th for now
and I just remember to run the engine from time to time on long down
hill runs.
Lower weight oil and lesser strength valve springs wouldent be
something to do to a daily rider.
It will help to think in terms of energy conservation rather than fuel
economy. It makes it easier to pick out when you are tossing gas away.
There is a video availabe at www.craigvetter.com that talks about some
extreme stuff that you can do. It is kinda cool to see how much they
accomplished in the 80s

buell headlight retrofit
A friend of mine bought a KLR with this mod already done and it does look very sharp. He moved to Arizona so I can't get any pics
