Hey, has anyone here done the rings on their motor?
Any 'Tips' and 'Tricks' you can pass on?
my A7 is well over 60K mile and still seems to run like a clock, but I
do notice that its just slightly 'down' on power when I get to ride a
newer one side by side... (been tire kickin on KLRs available in the area)
Was thinking of just getting a newer (not '08) one and selling the old
one as a 'commuter' to someone...
BUT
my A7 is setup just right for the way I like it, between electric mods
and carburation, yadda, yadda, yadda, it really is about as purrfect
as 35 hp can get.
and most everything on it is Otherwise solid...
just did the valve adjust a couple weeks ago and only a small tweak on
2. fresh chain and cogs all the way around... clutch is solid
so even though its still running quite fine, I figure a ring job at
this point will prolly assure another 60K...
done rings before on 2 other bikes - mostly no-brainers
...prolly a good to replace the DOO also, never been done...
any tips/ideas?

Have you done a compression or leak down test on your motor yet? First
thing I would do. I'm sure others will chime in with places to find
detailed instructions on either procedure.

COmpression test doesn;t really tell you much, with the KACR, the
reading really is useless - but I did it anyway... 108 - like I said,
useless. And Didnt have time to do a leakdown since I was finishing up
some needed maintenance before an extended trip, and was strapped on
time to even do regular work before departure.
But the question is not 'if'.
I'm gonna do the rings - just figurin itz been done before, and there
might be some helpful BTWs out there...
topend is fine - was redone at 40K+ ish

Also, check the valve timing. I've never seen it on a KLR, but my Concours
cam chain stretched beyond tolerance, and replacing it (and the guides)
really woke up the motor. (It's 108K miles now, on the original rings, good
compression, burns less oil than my KLR).
On the KLR, you need to tire up the compression release so as to get a good
compression test. I jumpered it from my non-running car to get a little more
juice to spin the motor without the compression release.

Sorry for the late input on this thread (Jim, I know you've already
bought a new tire), but I'll add that I've gotten 10K miles out of the
Michelin Anakees and they're a great on-road tire. I think Michael
still has my review comments in the tire review page. Also, I run my
rear tire at 36 PSI and my front at 32 PSI.
