He Jim, Another possible cause is failure of the float valve to shut off, flooding the carburetor and stalling the bike while running. This may have occurred temporarily and then corrected itself while you pulled off to the side and restarted. This problem has happened repeatedly to me, to the point where I am now replacing the float valve. If it occurs while the bike is stopped, fuel will begin to run out the overflow on to the ground so the problem is pretty obvious. The problem can be dealt temporarily, sufficient to "limp" home by shutting the petcock off (to prevent overflow) and on (to fill up the float bowl), thereby manually performing the task of the float and float valve (yes I have done this on several occasions). So before you attack the petcock you may want to see if this problem happens again and consider other possible causes. I recognized the situation as low fuel and switched to reserve while pulling over to the right. Sure enough the bike restarted and I make it home to discover plenty of fuel in the tank. I assume I have a problem with the fuel petcock and the vacuum diaphram system as I have no fuel filter or other restriction. I do intend to check the vacuum line and bypass the petcock diaphram because I need more than a 150 mile range. Since I'm a cheap bastid I want to simply cut out the center of the diaphram, remove the needle plug and spring, cap the vac line and be done with it. Any one have a problem with this? I realize I will now have to turn off the petcock when I park the bike but I think I can train myself to do this. It could be that the filter on top of the 'normal' tube that goes into the tank from the petcock is clogged, while the reserve tube filter isn't (yet). Can you see any crud in the tank? __Arden

No idea of what happened or why. Maybe try putting it back on main and seeing how yours runs. Could it be a temporary glitch in the vacuum action in the petcock? Maybe a momentary bind in the action and the next time you start it it works correctly. Just an idea.
