Local WalMart has Rotella Synthetic in 5w-40 ($16.95/gal). Dino
available in the usual 15w-40 ($9.95/gal). No "Energy Saving" on 5w-
40. Just spent $25 on Suzuki 15w-50 synthetic for latest (today) oil
change. Will the Rotella syn 5w-40 be OK for the KLR? Hope my Kawi
green and black '06 doesn't try to turn yellow with the Suzuki oil in
it. Steve Strader, Ukiah, CA

Let me sum it up this way;
1/Any oil is better than no oil.
2/Fresh oil is better than old oil.
3/Any motor oil will lubricate your engine.
4/Nobody really knows if synthetic is better than dyno,
and finally
5/There is no universal consensus on what is "best".
My golden rule is "change oil at 1500 miles and use a good brand"
You can't go wrong. Its that easy!

Either one will work very well for you for up to 2,000 miles
(depending on how hard you ride). I prefer the 5W to the 15W since
it's not quite as thick at startup, but the difference isn't enough to
worry about.

Almost in heated agreement Don,
Valvoline 10/40 fails the 40w test(shears to 30wt as previously
described during the past two years) at 1000 miles as per Caterpillar
oil analysis.
You will also notice a difference in the way the bike shifts
(harder) at ~1000 smiles.

I tried the Rotella 15W40 I found at Menards. But it didn't impress
me. I've always liked Castrol 20W50. Except I do 10W40 just before
the winter in case I get some rides in. Anyone got
experience/comment on Castrol or 20W50? I'd be interested in others
experience.

I guess this note is for RJ. Please tell me how does an oil "impress"
someone? Personally I'm not "impressed" by any oil, Rotella, Castrol,
or anything else. Now the KLR I am impressed with. The Versys I'm
impressed with. The Wee Strom and Tiger I[m impressed with. But oil?

And I was not being critical; it was more of a good-natured "Hey, you can't fool me!" kind of thing.
