potential clutch and transmission problem?

Had two things happen recently that cause me to question? First, while my bike (2006 with 10k miles) was in the shop for a tire change the mechanic (going over it in general) commented that the clutch plates looked too brown and seemed to have "crystalized". I never heard of such a thing, but he said it can happen from too much heat or running with too little oil (which it never has). Am I getting a load of bull? Second, tranny just started giving me a "thunk" when going from first to second. Doesn't seem to miss gears -- and all other gears seem fine -- but I really hate new noises. Any ideas?

Don't trust those dealer mechanics. They are trying to keep their doors open ..... and may sometimes not be honest. learn to check things yourself or get involved with groups that have tech days. Criswell whose clutch has 47,000 miles on it.

How did the mechanic get a view of the clutch while changing a tire? From the oil hole? I can't imagine he took off the side case, and if he didn't, he didn't see much of the clutch. KLR's have pretty rugged clutches and 10k miles is nothing unless you've been slipping it like crazy at the drag strip or getting stuck in mud/sand a lot. What kind of riding do you do? I'd say if it works fine, leave it alone and take a close look at your oil and oil filter when you change it. You can test it by putting the bike in 5th at 25-30mph or so and gassing it. If the motor revs without much more forward motion, it's slipping; if the bike accelerates or stumbles or stalls, the connection between the tranny and the wheel (the clutch) is good. The first/second gear clunk can be as simple to fix as tightening/lubing the drive chain, topping up the oil, or changing the oil. __Arden --- In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, "steventbarnett" wrote:

Huh? My clutch plates, when I look in through the top, look brown too. And have looked brown for the past 20,000 miles. My clutch works fine, BTW.

It is normal for a KLR tranny to go "thunk" from first to second, this is somewhat oil dependent (it happens more with thicker oils that interfere with the action of the syncros). Did you change the type or viscosity of oil that you use recently? -E

Beware of mechanics changing tires and looking for something else to charge you for. Clutches come in the box brown in color

My clutch friction plates were brown coming out of the bubble wrap! You'll know when you have a clutch problem when it starts slipping like mine did after 37,000 miles. It's not a catastrophic thing. It just starts slipping a little when you pin the throttle and gets progressively worse over time. I've heard of glazed clutch plates. But that's usually something I associate with dry clutches.
