2008 valve adjustment

Hi to the group
I wanted to do my first valve clearance inspection on
my 2008 KLR but tere is not enough space to remove the
valve cover without removing other components or
lowering the motor. If any of the group has experience
with the 2008 valve cover removal, I would appreciate
your input
Thanks
Sylvain

Do you have a Clymer Manual? I would assume that the '08 setup is
similar to the other years to a large extent. On my '06, you have to
remove the tank, the engine cylinder/frame brace, the two
rubber "hockey pucks" on the frame for the gas tank, and the spark plug
coil before you can take the valve cover off and actually get it out of
the way.

Speaking of Clymer, I contacted them last fall about the 08 manual. They
said 2 to 4 years. On the other hand the single service manual for the
08 beats the old ones hands down. The pictures are recognizable, for
instance.

Remove the side covers, seat and gas tank. Remove the 3 bolts holding
the fan to the radiator and tie it up out of the way. Watch the u
clips on the radiator. They will fall off and hide when you remove
the bolts holding the fan. I didn't remove the " hockey pucks " on
the frame for the gas tank. It is not necessary on the '08 to remove
the coil ( it has been relocated on the '08 ) Remove the spark plug
wire and temperature sending unit wire and tuck them out of the way.
Remove the four valve cover bolts. Lift up on the cover to seperate
the gasket from either the head or cover. Push it forward compressing
the radiator hose slightly and lift it up and out of the left side of
the bike. Somewhat easier to get off on the '08 than previous years
of KLR. I had one exhaust valve below low spec with 1,000 miles on
the bike. I reset all four. Ken

I was very concerned with that, when I did the subframe bolt, so I bought a
$17 Horrible Freight Air Drill just for the job. Loud mother, but it worked.
