Hi Ed, it sounds to me like you are hearing the KACR (Kawasaki Auto Compression Release) at idle. Look at a parts fiche at BikeBandit.com to see what it looks like. If it goes away when you rev it up then it's not an exhaust leak. If not, check your exhaust header mounting nuts. If it bothers you, turn the idle up a bit. Use whatever oil floats your boat. I use Honda GN 10-40 myself, but that's just me. The KLR turns oil black in a hurry. A better measure of an oil is to put a drip on your thumb and rub it with your forefinger to tell if it's still viable, I reckon.
