rings & valve seals... an easy job?

Hi Ben, other more experienced people on the list may confirm or correct me so use that as my disclaimer since the only engine's I've performed a leakdown test on were my own, but I think you maybe you might have misunderstood what you were told about the results of the test. The people that did the test should be able to confirm this but I think what you understood was the valve seals were bad but I suspect what they meant was that your exhaust valves weren't sealing properly. I can't think of anyway that a leakdown test could determine that you needed new valve seals.
Out of curiousity what was the percentage of leakage determined during the test and was your engine as close to operating temperature as possible when tested, why did you get the test done, high mileage, oil consumption, lack of power, etc., provide this info and some of the real mechanics will probably provide you with more valuable information...have a great evening......Greg

Hey there,
So, after a leakdown test at Godspeed in Oakland it appears that I
could use new rings and exhaust valve seals. I was considering
ordering a 685 kit from Schnitz, but money is a little tight right
now. Though I still haven't ruled out this option just yet. Are
valve seals a do-able task for a mechanically-inclined, though
lesser-experienced klr owner? Besides the seals, rings, and gaskets
are there other parts that should be replaced while i'm in there? Oh,
and will I need to pick up some special tools to execute this thing
gracefully?
Thanks!
Ben
