I've had a 2003 KLR for about a year now and the mileage has been running around 45mpg. At $2.50 a gallon last summer that was acceptable. This year we're up to $3.59 and rising fast - up 10c in the last 2 weeks. So, how about some ideas for improving the MPG? What're you getting? A light throttle hand and modest highway speeds are probably your best bet. You can also keep your tires inflated to max, changing over to a streety tire like the Gripsters, Scorpions, etc. might help but no guarantees. It would be interesting to see a test on how much better mileage you could get by wearing tight-fitting leather instead of textile clothes, or changing to a more pull-back handlebar that would keep your elbows out of the wind. Enjoy your cheap gas...in my corner of California, all the premium gas is over $4.00 now, and regular is around $3.79 at the cheap stations. Looks like the pieces of wood attached to the cables were still burning. I believe someone mentioned that the bridge deck was creosote treated timbers which would accelerate the burning processes. I've seen creosote treated railroad ties burning and it is pretty amazing. Truly a sad day for the area. Alan A13 Iowa Chris Norloff wrote:

If the bike is stock the best things you can do are to check that the air filter is clean and not over oiled and possibly change your riding habits. A lot of people getting high mileage aren't aggressive riders and don't maintain high speeds, relatively speaking, for very long. It's quite common to over oil foam air filters. First thing I would do is to check the filter. Is the bike stock or has the carb been changed to account for changes in the intake and exhaust tract? Alan A13 Iowa Tom Dudones wrote:
